PPND - the Platform for Neolithic Radiocarbon Dates

26 radiocarbon dates have been published of the PPNB/PN site of Akar çay Tepe, Şanlıurfa.
For five of the dates the stratigraphic position is given. Two of these dates (Beta 138584; Beta 138583) range from the late middle PPNB to the late PPNB (Phase V). Beta 138586 dates Phase III, a transitional phase from the late PPNB to the Pottery Neolithic. The dates Beta 138582 and 138585 date to the PN-phases of the site. The dates are in perfect stratigraphic order, but Phase V was attributed by the excavators to the late PPNB.

More dates have been published recently¹, but the correlation of loci/feature number with the stratigraphic phases is not given, so a more detailled reconstruction of the chronological sequence within the late PPNB is not possible yet.

Additionally Phase VI, excavated in 2002, points to an earlier occupation of the site, which the excavators attributed to the Middle PPNB for typological reasons (grill-plan-buildings; Byblos points) (http://www.tayproject.org/TAYages.fm$Retrieve?CagNo=69&html=ages_detail_e.html&layout=web [last access 25.4.2010]).
